Medic 505th PIR M1C with Net and Brassard
The following is Lawdog's own description of the work carried out to produce this first class helmet.
We begin with an original WW2 front seam swivel bale steel shell manufactured by McCord Radiator of Detroit, Michigan between October 1943 and November 1944. First, years of post war paint are stripped from the shell in a caustic bath. The shell is then re-corked between coats per QM specs, and re-painted using industrial grade OD FS33070 oil based paint. This paint is computer matched to McCord’s own original color. The distinctive insignia of the 2nd Battalion 505th PIR of the 82nd Airborn were then hand stenciled onto the shell using 1944 dated ivory lead based paint. I then give the insignia my own unique age patina. The chinstraps are khaki shade 03, 11-rib weave and feature the correct Dot snaps for the liner. The chinstrap hardware is blackened brass in the early war style.
The liner is of post war Capac manufacture with front insignia eyelet. The liner has been converted to the M1C variant with the addition of DOT snaps for the chinstraps. The webbing was completely replaced using khaki shade 03 triple-panel HBT. The webbing suspension is secured with mid war blackened brass A-washers and OD painted semi- tubular rivets that are correctly roll crimped in place with an arbor press for a factory tight finish. The A-yokes, correctly placed under the liner suspension, are original Olive Drab and correct for a mid war imprression. They feature OD painted cast steel buckles. The sweatband is made with khaki suspension webbing and re-faced with new die cut leather and an OD painted buckle. The nape strap is sized large. Both the nape strap and sweatband are stamped with my own QM number. The liner also features a repro leather liner strap with an OD painted cam buckle.
To top this impression off, I have added an OD 3/8 inch British drawstring helmet net and a Lawdog Steel Helmets reproduction medic brassard which has been tucked under the net.
